SUMMARY:

Traffic accidents constitute a significant public health and social development problem, directly impacting morbidity and mortality, the economy, and the quality of life of the population. In the context of the 2030 Agenda, the need to link the reduction of road accidents to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is highlighted, especially target 3.6, which aims to reduce deaths and injuries in traffic. This study aimed to identify which SDGs are directly or indirectly related to the reduction of traffic accidents; analyze the state scenario of Rio Grande do Norte regarding accidents and public road safety policies; develop a Traffic Accident Observatory as a strategic monitoring tool; and propose intersectoral strategies aligned with the SDGs. Methodologically, this is a scoping review, associated with the analysis of data on traffic accidents in the state. The results showed that the 7th Health Region had the highest concentration of accidents, accounting for 71.7% of the total records (59,488 occurrences), which, according to the estimate released by the State Health Plan (2020-2023), in a universe of 1,342,500 inhabitants, corresponds to 38.59% of the state's population. Following this, the 2nd Health Region appears with 11.4% (9,474 records) in a universe of 484,631 inhabitants, corresponding to 13.93% of the state's population. Together, these two regions account for 83.1% of the traffic accidents recorded in the state, which is related to the fact that they encompass the main urban centers of Rio Grande do Norte, characterized by intense flow of vehicles and people. In this sense, there is an asymmetrical distribution of accidents among health regions, with a significant concentration in urban areas with higher traffic, in addition to the persistence of territorial and social inequalities associated with the occurrence of accidents. As a technical-scientific product, the creation of the "Lives in Traffic" Observatory was proposed, structured as a strategic executive panel aligned with the SDGs, incorporating indicators of mortality, economic costs, critical territories, priority profiles, and projections up to 2030. It is concluded that traffic accidents are not only a mobility problem, but reflect structural inequalities and political choices. Thus, the integration between health, mobility, urban planning, governance, and sustainable development proves essential for the formulation of more effective, equitable, and evidence-based public policies.
