SUMMARY:

Microemulsion are versatile systems within 10 to 100 nm capable of carry natural oil and enhancing its characteristics. Passiflora setacea, highlight between other species from this genus due to its higher antioxidant potential. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop a microemulsified system capable of delivering P. setacea oil with potential topical application. Thereby, we obtained the oil from P. setacea seeds through Soxhlet extraction, with a yield of ~ 30.8% of oil. Subsequently, its chemical composition was characterized by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer, which exhibit a majority composition of omega 6 and 9. Afterwards, experimental design was used to identify the optimal oil, surfactant and surfactant ratio composition in relation to droplet size, PDI and visual classification responses. The Box-Behnken design was satisfactory in predicting the influence of the factors and their interactions, the model has r2 of 0.99, 0.94 and 0.91, for PDI, size and visual classification, respectively. Through the response surface and desirability profile, it was possible to develop a blank system, followed by the improvement for topical delivery. These systems showed stability over 60 days, with a good prognosis to be further investigated for activity and toxicity.
