SUMMARY:

The work has been various transformations and is influenced by socio-historical context
experienced. The work is very important for the life of the subject, being influential in the
constitution of identity and at the same time a social structuring. In this context, university
managers experience enormous professional challenges, because the problems that permeate their
work in the management of public universities are quite complex and involve organizational
peculiarities. Managers assume a critical position for the success of these institutions as the
strategic objectives will be achieved through their work, who will be responsible for mobilizing the
team they coordinate. In this reality, there are servers who take over management and report aspects
such as: not having identification with the position; involve abdication of other professional
projects; there is work overload; temporality in office; unpredictability and absence of planning,
there ins´t preparation before the management (Wilhelm, 2012; Silvia et al., 2013; Kanan e Zanelli,
2011). The work environment and the way people relate to it can contribute to the promotion or
deterioration of psychic health. There is a link between work and psychic health, and depending on
how work is organized or the conditions it presents may pose risks to workers' health. In this
context, there are factors that facilitate and restrict the subject and the development of activities.
This research aims to apprehend how academic managers of UFRN perceive and experience their
work environment. This is a qualitative descriptive research that will use the case study procedure
to understand the perception of the investigated subjects. The research subjects are professors
working in the following academic management functions: Graduate Coordinator, Post graduate
Coordinator and Heads of Department. Specific focus groups will be applied to each of these
management categories. It will have 8 managers per group, totaling 24 participants. The results will
be analyzed through the phenomenological method of research in psychology in order to create
meaning units based on the speeches of the participating subjects. After analyzing the data, the
study will present a diagnosis of the perception and experience of academic managers in their work
context, as well as intends to collaborate with propositions for the improvement of institutional
policies related to university management.
