SUMMARY:

Issues related to health and well-being have gained prominence in recent years, and in the context of public universities, there has been a progressive effort to seek answers through institutional policies and programs, given the recognized increase in the incidence of psychological distress among university students affected by anxiety disorders, excessive stress, and depression. Considering the multidimensionality of the factors that determine mental health in the academic environment, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between mental health indicators, sociodemographic characteristics, and factors in the university context among graduate students at a public university. The descriptive, cross-sectional study used closed and open questionnaires made available to students via the internet, with the data collected subsequently treated by quantitative-qualitative analysis. The results indicate that 66.7% of participants showed signs of Common Mental Disorders (CMD), with a predominance of symptoms such as difficulty performing daily activities (85.71%), nervousness/tension/worry (78.57%), and tiring easily (71.43%). An association was observed between psychological distress and factors such as female gender, low family income, lack of institutional support, and difficulty balancing academic activities with work and domestic tasks. Qualitative analysis revealed that while relationships with teachers and social support act as protective factors, pressure for productivity and fragile interpersonal relationships are the main negative aspects perceived. Discussion of the results showed convergence with national and international studies, reinforcing the need for institutional policies specifically aimed at graduate students. Considering the policies for permanence in higher education and the importance of promoting actions aimed at health and well-being among university students, the “Mental Health Prevention Guide for Graduate Students” was developed as a technical product—a digital booklet that summarizes the main results of the research, offers guidance on self-care strategies, and maps institutional and public health network support services. It is hoped that this educational resource will serve as a vehicle for disseminating clear information about basic mental health care and how to access available assistance, contributing to reducing stigma, encouraging preventive help-seeking, and building a healthier and more welcoming academic environment.
