SUMMARY:

The current standard for bonding glass fiber posts to resin-based composites relies on a time-consuming and technique-sensitive protocol involving immersion in concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), followed by washing, controlled drying, and silanization. In this study, atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) was investigated as a surface activation method for glass fiber–reinforced epoxy posts, with the aim of partially or completely replacing the conventional H₂O₂ pretreatment. Surface chemical changes were monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which revealed increased densities of oxygen-containing groups (–OH and Si–OH), indicating enhanced surface activation and greater potential for silane coupling. Wettability measurements confirmed increased hydrophilicity after plasma treatment. Push-out tests showed that the combined plasma and chemical treatment (P30PC) produced the highest interfacial shear strength (43.5 ± 10.2 MPa), corresponding to a 30–35% improvement over untreated and plasma-only groups. Fractographic analysis revealed a shift from brittle debonding to more energy-dissipative failure modes. Longer plasma exposure (60 s) did not provide additional benefits and, in some cases, reduced adhesion, suggesting surface saturation or over-oxidation. Overall, ACP acted synergistically with conventional conditioning by simultaneously cleaning and activating the post surface, increasing surface energy and reactive functional groups, and significantly improving bond strength and durability. This approach offers a promising strategy to simplify clinical procedures and enhance the longevity of restorations in endodontically treated teeth.
