SUMMARY:

Introduction: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a practice recommended by the World Health
Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund, defined as the direct contact between
the baby’s body and the mother’s chest, with both unclothed, promoting numerous benefits
for the mother–newborn dyad. However, low adherence among obstetric and neonatal care
teams has been observed. Based on this, the present study aims to analyze, through a
systematic review, the impacts of immediate skin-to-skin contact during the first hour of life
on neonatal physiological parameters.
Method: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis that will be structured according to
the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols
(PRISMA). The PICOT strategy will be used, and data search, collection, and analysis will be
conducted independently by two reviewers, while a third reviewer will mediate any
disagreements. The search strategy will use descriptors extracted from the Health Sciences
Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), according to the PICOT
strategy, as demonstrated below:
("Infant, Newborn"[MeSH] OR newborn* OR neonat*) AND ("Kangaroo-Mother Care
Method"[MeSH] OR "Skin-to-Skin Contact" OR "skin to skin") AND (“Body Temperature
Regulation” OR “Glycemic Control” OR “Apgar Score” OR “Breast Feeding”).
Expected Results: As this is a highly relevant practice that promotes numerous benefits for
both the newborn and the mother, it is expected that studies with scientific evidence regarding
this practice will be gathered in order to support the implementation of this care in both
low-risk and high-risk maternity settings, as well as to raise awareness among healthcare
professionals working in this field regarding adherence to skin-to-skin contact during the
newborn’s first hour of life.
