SUMMARY:

Intestinal ostomies are surgical procedures that promote significant changes in people’s lives,
affecting physical, emotional, social, and psychological aspects. Among the main difficulties
faced in daily life is the perception of unpleasant odors from effluents eliminated into the
collecting pouch, a factor that may cause embarrassment, insecurity, social isolation, low
self-esteem, and impairment in quality of life and adaptation. Although activated charcoal
filters are one of the most commonly used strategies for controlling these odors, scientific
gaps still exist regarding comparisons with natural, accessible, and low-cost alternative
methods, such as lavender essential oil, recognized for its aromatic, relaxing, and potential
deodorizing properties. Therefore, this study aims to compare the effectiveness of lavender
essential oil with activated charcoal in reducing odors in collecting devices used by people
with intestinal ostomies, as well as to evaluate its effects on quality of life and adaptation to
the ostomy. This is a randomized clinical trial, controlled, single-blind, longitudinal clinical
trial with a quantitative approach, to be conducted in a specialized service for the care of
people with ostomies. Adult individuals with intestinal ostomies who report discomfort
related to odor will participate. After recruitment and randomization, participants will be
allocated into two groups in a 1:1 ratio: the Intervention Group, which will use 10 drops of
lavender essential oil applied to the clean collecting pouch; and the Control Group, which
will use an activated charcoal filter according to routine care practices. The follow-up period
will be one month. Data collection will occur before and after the intervention using a
sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, a Numerical Rating Scale for odor
intensity/discomfort, the City of Hope Quality of Life Ostomy Questionnaire
(COH-QOL-OQ), and the Ostomized Person Adaptation Level Scale (ENAE). Data will be
analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting a significance level of 5%. It is
expected that lavender essential oil will demonstrate equal or superior effectiveness compared
with activated charcoal in reducing odor perception, promoting improvements in quality of
life scores and adaptation to the ostomy, as well as confirming the feasibility of a safe,
simple, and economically accessible intervention for self-care use. The study may contribute
to strengthening evidence-based practice in nursing and enterostomal therapy, in addition to
supporting new therapeutic strategies aimed at the comprehensive care of people with
intestinal ostomies, expanding odor management options focused on well-being, autonomy,
and social reintegration.
