SUMMARY:

Currently, we perceive a significant disconnect in formal education between the scientific knowledge taught in schools and the knowledge of the traditional communities that (re)exist in our country. One of these is the fishing community of Guamaré, located on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte. Given the absence of dialogue in our educational context, this research addresses some central questions, such as: How can we work with the traditional knowledge of local communities in schools in Rio Grande do Norte? How can dialogue between these forms of knowledge contribute to a cultural, critical, and humanistic education for teachers? This dissertation investigated how to integrate the traditional knowledge of local fishermen alongside the scientific knowledge proposed in current curricula, seeking to promote a decolonial and dialogical educational approach. The methodology adopted was qualitative, participatory, and collaborative, of the case study type, and began with a Freirean Thematic Investigation, which involved semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and observations of a real-world context. Based on this investigation, an Educational Product for the continuing education of teachers was developed, organized into four meetings with a workload of 30 hours, validated by a panel in the qualification exam, which included theoretical discussions, field classes with fishermen, and proposals for actions and activities in schools. The course highlighted the current importance of the dialogue between traditional knowledge and curricular content in formal education, emphasizing its relevance for a critical, humanizing, and decolonial scientific education. The results indicated that the training course achieved its main objective of promoting a dialogue between traditional and scientific knowledge in the classroom, pointing to the need to overcome the banking and anti-dialogical educational model and adopt a dialogical approach that values praxis and interculturality. We hope that this research will contribute to the training of teachers in Guamaré-RN and the surrounding region by proposing reflections and teaching strategies that articulate and connect the traditional knowledge of fishermen with the scientific knowledge used in current curricula, promoting a more critical perception of the processes of knowledge colonization, encouraging respect for nature and the environment, and defending epistemological equity between these forms of knowledge.
