Presentation

The Graduate Program in Teaching of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (PPGECNM), linked to the Exact and Earth Sciences Center (CCET) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), started its activities in 2002. Created as a professional master's degree, its area of concentration is the Teaching of Sciences and Mathematics, and is focused on the training/education of in-service teachers, who work in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Sciences and Mathematics, both in Basic Education and in Higher Education, preferably , in the public school system.

In its demand, the Program has received teachers from both the capital and the coutryside of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and from other states of the North and Northeast regions (Pará, Bahia, Paraíba, Piauí, Ceará), constituting an integrating educational/training center.

Among the PPGECNM’s educational goals are:

• equipping graduate students so that they have the autonomy to reflect and re-dimension their pedagogical practice and produce knowledge that can be disseminated in the teaching of natural sciences and mathematics;

• promoting the foundation of scientific content and of current teaching methodologies;

• creating conditions for continuing studies, research and professional training in order to establish a continuous dialogue between scientific knowledge and school knowledge;

• emphasizing interdisciplinarity as an essential factor in the training/education and in the professional practice of graduate students

• contributing to a greater exchange with other national and international educational and research institutions.

With these goals, PPGECNM undertakes to contribute to the improvement of teaching and learning processes through the training/education of teachers who work in the education system, either through direct action in the classroom or through action in non-formal educational spaces where the teacher’s action is fundamental.
For this, the Program has a faculty composed of professors from the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Microbiology and Parasitology, Zoology, Physiology and Behavior, Education and from UFRN’s Distance Learning Office (SEDIS), who work especially in the licentiate programs and with research experiences in the field of education, especially those connected to the PPGECNM’s area of concentration.

The current PPGECNM’s lines of research and the related research projects address issues related to the Teaching of Sciences and Mathematics in its philosophical, epistemological, historical and socio-cultural dimensions. They stem from the research initiatives developed within the lines of research, the works (dissertations) produced by the master’s degree students.

Through its projects, the Program often offers activities that promote and facilitate the insertion of our production into the national and international scenario, such as events, courses, lectures, seminars. These activities, for the most part, involve researchers from other national and international institutions, and also, in turn, are carried out by professors of the PPGECNM in other graduate programs.

In other places of this website you will learn more about the PPGECNM, its activities, professors, students, curricular structure and others.

Welcome!
