EDUCATIONAL RPG IN SCIENCE AND MATH EDUCATION: THE THEME OF FAMILY FARMING
Educational RPG, Family farming, Mathematics teaching, Basic Education.
RPG (Role-Playing Game) is a game in which players assume different character roles and collaboratively create narratives. Developed in the mid-1970s in the United States, RPGs today encompass a variety of categories and game mechanics and have expanded beyond entertainment into fields such as education. With great potential to support the teaching and learning process, RPGs can foster the development of skills such as social interaction, argumentation, logical reasoning, and oral communication. This dissertation presents the development of an educational product in the form of a pedagogical RPG centered on the theme of family farming, primarily aimed at teaching Science and Mathematics in basic education. The goal is to use the RPG structure—with its narrative and collaborative elements—to promote contextualized math learning, exploring topics such as area calculation, proportions, statistics, and financial mathematics, as well as scientific themes related to ecology, climate, soil, and biodiversity. The work also seeks to challenge stereotypical views of Brazil’s Northeast region by highlighting its cultural and productive richness. The game is set in the semi-arid backlands of the Northeast, emphasizing local realities, traditional knowledge, and the challenges faced by small rural producers. The game’s characters are inspired by rural professions such as farmer, fisherman, cowboy, and carpenter, and their attributes were designed based on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The research follows a qualitative approach, with gameplay sessions planned for 9th-grade students in a public school to investigate its impact on student development. It is also intended for use with undergraduate mathematics teaching students and scholarship recipients of the Teaching Initiation Program (PIBID). Among the expected outcomes, it is hoped that the developed RPG will foster the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts in basic education.
