SUMMARY:

Pain in the postoperative period of cardiac surgeries is a frequent occurrence given the
invasive nature of sternotomy and the need for drains. Poorly controlled pain can lead to
hemodynamic problems and complications, which reinforces the need for effective
management to minimize such risks. In this context, Integrative and Complementary
Health Practices have shown promise as non-pharmacological methods for pain
management. The use of music has attracted increasing attention for its ability to
alleviate not only pain, but also anxiety and stress, offering a valuable alternative to
conventional treatments. Furthermore, another non-pharmacological therapy that is
effective in relieving pain and is easy to apply is cryotherapy or cold compress, due to
its anti-inflammatory properties. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the use of
music associated with cryotherapy in relieving pain during mediastinal drain removal in
patients in the postoperative period of myocardial revascularization. This is a
randomized controlled clinical trial to be conducted in accordance with the
Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines. It will be
developed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital do Coração de Natal (HCN), with a
simple, random, probabilistic sample of 52 participants divided equally into the
following groups: Control Group (CG) and Experimental Group (EG), with patients in
the immediate postoperative period of myocardial revascularization. Randomization
will be guaranteed through the “Research Randomizer” website. The control group will
receive standard care in the sector. The experimental group will receive the institution's
standard care plus the intervention of using music associated with cryotherapy in order
to verify its effectiveness in pain relief. A form will be used to collect patient
identification data, information about the surgery, in addition to the Visual Analogue
Scale and Visual Numeric Scale that will be applied to assess pain and the vital signs
table. This study will be submitted for evaluation by the Ethics and Research
Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. If a favorable opinion is
received, the proposal will be forwarded to the Teaching and Research Management of
the Hospital do Coração de Natal (HCN) and subsequently registered in the Brazilian
Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ReBEC). Conducting studies on non-pharmacological
methods has been encouraged with the aim of integrating these approaches into nursing
practice, promoting more humanized, holistic care based on scientific evidence.
Especially in intensive care settings, the adoption of these methods can complement
traditional treatments and contribute to improving patients' quality of life, expanding the
available care options, reducing costs and enriching clinical practice.
