SUMMARY:

The main biofuels produced on a large industrial scale are biodiesel and ethanol, and they have proven to be the most economically viable and widely implemented solution to replace conventional fossil fuels following a greener and more sustainable perspective. In this scenario, there is room to produce fully renewable biodiesel using ethanol instead of methanol, which is mainly derived from fossil resources. Considering relevant environmental, economic, and social factors, the discussion on the use of second-generation biofuels has gained prominence in recent years, especially with the support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris COP21 climate change agreement. One of the policies implemented by different countries has been the mandatory blending of biodiesel in commercial diesel. Thus, this work proposed the use of NIR spectroscopy to monitor the quality of biodiesel/diesel blends in terms of: (i) authentication of fully renewable ethyl biodiesel in B7 blends using two classifiers of a class (OCC), i.e. One- Class Partial Least Squares (OC-PLS) and Class Analogy Data-Driven Soft Independent Modeling (DD-SIMCA). In addition, Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) without (full spectrum) and with interval selection by the Successive Projection Algorithm (iSPA-LS-DA) were employed to discriminate samples of B7 ethylic mixtures in relation to the raw material. raw oil, in this case cottonseed, sunflower and soybean (ii) authentication of second-generation biodiesel feedstock in biodiesel/diesel blends using OC-PLS. For this, the biodiesel/diesel blends from jatropha and beef tallow were authenticated against biodiesel/diesel blends containing first generation biodiesel from sunflower, cottonseed, and soy. Additionally, Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS) was used to quantify the biodiesel content in biodiesel/diesel blends, regardless of the raw material used, in order to provide an analytical tool that supports quality control policies for these products in different countries, regardless of mandatory blending levels
