RESUMO:

The pipeline inspection using a device called Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) is a most applied methods for data acquisition about the physical structure of these pipelines. It is common for these PIGs to achieve peaks of speed detrimental to data collection and to the PIG itself. The objective of this work is to propose the speed control for PIGs by using bypass valve and microelectronics as a way to attenuate or eliminate these speed peaks, which are also known as "speed excursion". The microelectronics will be responsible for commanding the opening of the bypass valve, which will decrease the pressure behind the PIG and the PIG will suffer a reduction in speed. The main contribution of this work is to develop a speed controller for PIGs, which allows it to perform a safe and reliable inspection with speeds within an acceptable range. Finally, an oil industry problem will be solved where PIGs currently run the entire length of the pipeline without any speed control.
