RESUMO:

Inspection of pipelines using PIGs is one of the most applied methods for data acquisition regarding the physical structure of these pipelines. During the inspection operation, it is common for these PIGs to reach peaks of speed detrimental to data collection and to the PIG itself. The purpose of this qualification is to present the feasibility of speed control of PIGs using an electronically controlled by-pass valve as a means of attenuating or eliminating speed peaks during the inspection. A PIG Prototype of Ø6" was purchased and a Test Laboratory was built for the experimental tests. For the speed control, this PIG will be inserted in the test duct and will have in its electronics a microcontroller calculating the speed Of the PIG every 100 ms. In the occurrence of a speed peak, the microcontroller will command the opening of the by-pass valve, which will decrease the pressure behind the PIG and it will suffer a decrease of speed. Will save the data from that race to a memory card for later analysis. The realization of previous experimental tests, still without speed control, but with the objective of understanding the PIG behavior in the duct, enabled data collection, such as: velocity, space traveled and operating pressures in the PIG. The graphs obtained allowed to discover the occurrence of 4 to 8 speed peaks in the second half of the test loop. The partial results show that the monitoring of the speed and the space covered by the PIG occurred successfully and the validation of the Test Laboratory was performed as a success. Thus, by what has been achieved so far and bench tests with the by-pass valve and the microelectronics, it is expected until the end of the project to obtain the speed control of these PIGs.
