WHAT REMAINS: ENVIRONMENTAL STORYTELLING IN THE DIGITAL GAME FALLOUT 4 FROM A DIALOGIC PERSPECTIVE

Fallout 4 is a digital game released in 2015 by Bethesda Game Studios in which environmental storytelling plays a significant role in the world presented to the player. According to Carson (2000), this means the infusion of narrative elements in a physical space, whether it is real or digital. In this research, instances of environmental storytelling containing skeletons were analyzed, thus centered around the theme of death. They were identified within the game in the Vault 111, Concord and Lexington areas. To examine them, dialogic discourse analysis was used, based on Bakhtin (2011; 2014; 2016; 2018) and Volóchinov (2018; 2019). The main objective of this research was to characterize, from a dialogic perspective, instances of environmental storytelling connected to the theme of death in Fallout 4 within the selected areas. Based on the research corpus, these instances were divided into three categories: melancholic death, violent death, and comic death. The conclusion is that each storytelling instance must be understood as an utterance and analyzed based on its verbal and visual characteristics. Death in such utterances was represented in a mostly negative way as the definitive end of life. It represents a moment in which the individual is brought to reflect on the experiences they have lived, but also to commit extreme acts in search of relief from their unrest when facing the end.
