SUMMARY:

Antônio Pinto de Medeiros, although born in the Amazon region, was a poet, editor, and literary critic who developed his intellectual activities in Rio Grande do Norte. His life, as enigmatic as his poetry, saw him publish only two works: Um poeta à toa (1949) and Rio do vento (1951), which occupy a unique place in Brazilian poetic production of the period, which at that time was organized within the somewhat limited concept of the Generation of '45. However, Medeiros' work also shows a relationship with the 1930’s poetry, especially with the productions of Jorge de Lima and Murilo Mendes, but differs radically from them by constituting a poetics in rupture with God, the guiding theme of our research. Starting from a dialogue between literature and theology, but with the theoretical apparatus of literature and, above all, poetry as the main guide for our analyses, our dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, we analyze how this rupture is worked through in the poems, based on Comte-Sponville's (2007) concept of atheism. In the second chapter, our attention turned to the enigmatic cycle of Medeiros, from which we sought, from Friedrich (1978) and Barthes (1989), to relate Medeiros' poetry to the hermeticism of modern lyric poetry, as well as, based on Machado e Silva (2018), to situate it in the visionary tradition of modern Western poetry. In the third chapter, dialoguing with Eliade (1992) and Agamben (2007), our study focused on the profanation of the symbols and rites of Catholic Christianity. Although the break with God is the central theme of this poetry, it is noticeable that the poet has an empathetic view towards the socially marginalized and, in particular, courtesan women, an aspect that, based on studies such as Moraes (2016), Fortes and Grillo (2025) and Butler (2019), we discussed in our last chapter. Through this study, it was found that Pinto de Medeiros' work occupies a unique place in the panorama of Brazilian poetry, by choosing the break with religion as the central theme and organizing axis of his poetry, that such a break manifests itself through the profanation of Christian symbols and rites and yet, despite this, it produces an ethic of communion with marginalized subjects, especially women in the context of prostitution.
