SUMMARY:

ABSTRACT

This research aims to examine the discursive representations of specific characters that constitute chapter 9 of the Epistle to the Romans. The texts that form the corpus of the present study are drawn from the Bible, more specifically from the sixth book of the New Testament. The study focuses on the semantic level of the text within the framework of Textual Discourse Analysis (TDA), while also proposing an analysis centered on the levels of textual structuring, particularly at the microtextual level. The corpus under analysis consists of an epistle written in Antiquity and intended to communicate with a community of faith, namely the church in Rome. Accordingly, the general objective of this research is to identify which linguistic and textual elements the author, Paul of Tarsus, employed in constructing the discursive representations of Christ, Israel (the people of Israel), Abraham, and the God of Israel. The central research question guiding this study is the following: Through this letter, what discursive representations does Paul of Tarsus construct of himself, of Christ, of Israel, of Abraham, and of God in order to support his argument concerning the “problem of Israel”? Based on a corpus consisting of a single chapter, the analysis involved the identification, description, and interpretation of the lexical items used throughout the chapter, according to the semantic categories of referencing, predication, and modification. The results obtained were organized into tables that describe each of these categories. Simultaneously, the clauses that mention the people of Israel, Abraham, God, and the author’s self-references were isolated and analyzed separately. One of the theoretical implications of this study is that the corpus corresponds to the propositional content referred to by Adam (2011), which serves as the basis for the construction of the discursive representation produced by the author. From this perspective, the microtextual analysis provided insight into the “global meaning” that constitutes the unity of the text (Adam, 2022). In addition to the microtextual analysis, this study draws on Douglas Moo (2023)—one of the most renowned exegetes of the Epistle to the Romans—in order to engage with the text from an exegetical standpoint. Religious discourse is characterized by enunciative heterogeneity, as it may convey the voice of God, the voice of a prophet, or, in the case of this research, the voice of an apostle of Jesus Christ. This multiplicity of enunciative voices contributes to the richness and interpretive complexity of such texts. Based on the analysis of the chapter under investigation, it can be argued that the author seeks to persuade the members of the church in Rome that salvation is not restricted to Israel as a Jewish ethnic group, but rather that it extends to all peoples of the world. The Portuguese translation used for the corpus is the New International Version (NIV).
