SUMMARY:

This research analyzes biographical texts published in Brazilian periodicals between 1838 and 1893, disseminated in sections devoted to this genre, which promoted the figure of the Franco-Swiss writer Anne-Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein (1766-1817). Madame de Staël was an influential thinker in the transition between the Enlightenment and Romanticism, having produced a robust body of work encompassing political writings, literary criticism, philosophy, and fiction, and gaining wide recognition in Europe for her vehement political opposition to the regime of Napoleon Bonaparte. The corpus examined in this study consists of texts published in biographical sections of nineteenth-century periodicals from different regions of Brazil. It is assumed that the multifaceted space of the newspaper page functions as a decisive element in the nation’s cultural formation, insofar as it dynamizes borrowed content, transforming it by consciously and strategically offering entertainment, information, and curiosity to its target audience. Adopting the methodological perspective of cultural transfer studies (Espagne, Werner, 1988; Espagne, 2017; Espagne, 2023) and Lüsebrink’s (2017) notion of the transculturality of national spaces, this study applies Roger Chartier’s theoretical concepts practice, appropriation, and representation, from Cultural History (2002; 1991), demonstrating the process through which the cultural practice of journalistic biographism contributes to shaping a model of intellectual and educational representation derived from Madame de Staël. The impact of the resemanticizations produced within the already-established biographical genre, as studied by Madelénat (1984), through the actions of journalistic biographism underscores the active role of the press in formulating representations of national culture (Barboza, 2010). Convergently, there emerges a dynamic of appropriation of a foreign figure within the national context, via the circulation and publication of Brazilian nineteenth-century periodicals, which influences the construction of behavioral profiles of women and Brazilian intellectuals. This appropriation materializes notably in publications addressing marriage; women’s education, as well as that of mothers and youth; the model of the intellectual; references in novels and educational treatises; debates surrounding the authorization for theatrical performances; and, in literature, citations of fundamental principles of Brazilian Romanticism, dating back to the publication of the Revista Niterói in 1836.
