SUMMARY:
One of the most important figures to contribute to the literature published in the Brazilian press was Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. However, there are still gaps in studies that relate his works to the periodicals in which they were published. With that in mind, the aim of this work is to investigate the image of slavery in the short stories “Virginius: narrativa de um advogado” (1864), “Mariana” (1871) and “O caso da vara” (1891), from the perspective of Imagology, taking into account the periodicals in which they were published: Jornal das Famílias and Gazeta de Notícias. To this end, the research will be guided by the notions of Imagology proposed by Pageaux and Machado (1988), Pageaux (2011), and Ribeiro-de-Sousa (2004); the texts by Chartier (2000), Ferreira (2009), and Sevcenko (2003), which address the relationship between literature and history; as well as Malerba (1999), Gorender (2016), and Castro and Alencastro (2008), who deal with the history of nineteenth-century Brazil; Chalhoub (2007) and Gledson (2006), on Machado de Assis’s writing; and finally, Sodré (1966) and Crestani (2009; 2011), who study the press and the aforementioned periodicals. Thus, the research adopts a qualitative approach, based on bibliographical analysis. It is observed that the image of slavery represented by Machado de Assis in the short stories dialogues both with the social and political issues of slaveholding in Brazil and with the editorial demands and expectations of the periodicals in which they were disseminated.
