SUMMARY:

With the recognition of the profession of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) Translators/Interpreters (TILS) by Law Nº. 13.146/2015, there has been a significant increase in the presence of these professionals in educational settings. However, challenges persist, such as the unfamiliarity and estrangement of the school community regarding the presence and role of these professionals. This research aims to analyze the verbovisuality of Libras in the translations and interpretations performed by TILS within the state school system of Rio Grande do Norte. The theoretical framework is grounded in the studies of Bakhtin and the Circle (2003; 2017; 2018), exploring concepts of language, body, performativity, and dialogicity, alongside contributions from Moita Lopes (2018) in Applied Linguistics, which promotes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding discursive practices in the school environment. Furthermore, the concept of verbovisuality, as discussed by Brait (2009; 2010; 2013), is central to the analysis of the visual and verbal dimensions of Libras interpretations. The specific objectives include understanding how verbovisuality manifests in TILS practices, exploring the school community's perceptions of these professionals, and investigating the dialogical relationships between interpreters and deaf students in the classroom. Methodologically, this is an exploratory and descriptive study, with data collected through video recordings and interviews with TILS and deaf students. The research aims to contribute to the advancement of studies on Libras, highlighting the complexity of the verbovisual interactions of TILS and promoting a more inclusive understanding of the educational dynamics involving the deaf and their linguistic mediators.
