SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to analyze celebrity speeches that produced meaningful effects on social
media sites during Covid-19 social isolation, understanding the knowledge-power relations
and the forms of subjectivity that are produced in the surveillance of the virtual. This
research was developed in the field of Applied Linguistics and is located in the area of
French Discourse Analysis, from the arqueogenealogia of Michel Foucault through notions
such as discourse, statement, knowledge, power, surveillance and subjectivity. It also
grounded us, studies on the internet Castells (2003, 2015), Jenkins (2009), Lemos e Lévy
(2010), discussions about the Covid-19 pandemic Birman (2021), Harari (2020), Morin
(2021), and studies on Applied Linguistics of Kleiman (2007), Moita Lopes (2006, 2007,
2020), Pennycook (2006). In this study, we problematize the modes of subjectivities
produced by celebrities in the face of virtual surveillance in times of pandemic. The corpus
produced in this research consists of thirty reports that circulated from 2020 to 2023. This
is a descriptive-interpretative research with a qualitative approach. Thus, when analyzing
the discourse of the celebrity subject in the pandemic on social networking sites, We
understand that their actions are consistent with the truths that circulate at this historical
moment. It is a subject who subjectiveizes himself when influencing his audience, this
works from a self-government that leads the subject to exercise a government of others.
Virtual surveillance becomes a central point of the pandemic so that bodies can be
controlled, thus the subject is manufactured by knowledge and powers that discipline the
smallest habits. Thus, the subject begins to subjectify himself by monitoring himself and

following the rules in a constant care of himself and others. On the other hand, by resisting
and not following the coronavirus prevention rules, the subject goes through a severe
punitive process that in the virtual world presents itself through cancellation culture.
Therefore, the knowledge and powers, which are exercised through the surveillance of
social networking sites, they pacify the subjects so that the rules are followed, as well as so
that failures such as breaking the lockdown are punished so that the subject repents and
becomes subjectivized again according to what the discursive order of the virtual dictates in
times of pandemic.
