SUMMARY:

This study aims to broaden the discussions on inclusive practices in swimming instruction. To this end, the main objective was to develop a continuing education program focused on inclusive practices in swimming classes. The specific objectives were: a) to discuss the challenges and possibilities in mediating inclusive pedagogical practices; b) to reflect on the curriculum structure of Physical Education courses (Licentiate and Bachelor’s degrees); c) to enable the construction and adaptation of pedagogical materials that promote the participation of people with disabilities in swimming classes; and d) to experience swimming practice in the context of inclusion. As a methodological approach, a critical-collaborative action research was adopted, based on Thiollent (2011). Data were collected through field notes and questionnaires containing open- and closed-ended questions throughout the training process. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin (2009). The training intervention was structured in the following stages: a) mapping of teachers working with swimming; b) invitation to participate in the research; c) diagnostic analysis and planning of the training proposal; d) implementation of ten face-to-face sessions involving both theoretical discussions and practical experiences, including pool-based activities; e) development of inclusive pedagogical material; and f) analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The results revealed a lack of specific training for teaching swimming in general, and an even greater gap when it comes to inclusive proposals. The participants expressed a desire for change after the training, with a broadened perspective on the concept of inclusion. It was also found that knowledge about disability, understanding of inclusion concepts, and critical reflection on pedagogical practices are essential for building more inclusive approaches. The gaps in both initial and continuing teacher education highlight the need to expand discussions on Inclusive Physical Education.
