Maracá, doublet and viola: Xukuru poets inventing the Sertão da poesia
Sertão da Poesia. Xukuru. Teixeira’s School of Poetry. São José do Egito’s School of Poetry.
This study investigates the Xukuru indigenous presence in the municipalities of Teixeira/PB and São José do Egito/PE from the time of their invasion by Europeans and descendants to the present day with the purpose of understanding their contribution to the configuration of what we call Sertão da Poesia, certain sertão understood as a way of life invented by poetic discourse. Part of historiographical review, transcription and reading of documents from the 19th century. XVII, XVIII and XIX, archaeological sources and sesmarias and baptism, marriage and death records. We believe that in the context of interethnic interactions with the invaders, Xukuru who survived the “War of the Barbarians” and remained or returned to this region handled poetry, their own and those of the invaders, as a strategy of resistance and social prominence, even with descendants having become precursors of the School of Poetry of Teixeira and of the School of Poetry of São José do Egito”.
