SUMMARY:

Flow is a psychological state of optimal experience of full and satisfactory concentration on an activity. Entering and staying in a state of flow can differ for each person, depending on their level of proficiency in the activity at hand, level of perceived challenge, feeling of control over the results of the activity, among other factors. Given this, software are promising tools for inducing users into a state of flow, given the potential to adapt according to user preferences. In particular, digital games seem closely related to flow, due to the potential of games to present flow-friendly environments: immersive, challenging and that allow players to perfect skills. With the purpose of evaluating the optimal experience, researchers have been investigating and proposing ways to evaluate the flow state. This work aims to propose instruments capable of helping researchers in evaluating the flow experience in a gaming context. Initially, the possibility of investigating the flow state through different physiological signals will be investigated, based on works in the literature. Next, the psychometric instruments previously proposed in the literature for self-assessment of flow state will be investigated, in order to investigate whether an instrument suitable for the context of games in general has not been previously proposed. If not found, a new instrument will be proposed, which will be validated in experiments. The study helps researchers in the field of games have the necessary instrumentation to examine the optimal experience of players in games.
