SUMMARY:
The main acute leukemias (ALs) are lymphoid (ALL, B or T) and myeloid (AML), in
addition to bidifferentiated and undifferentiated, which are rarer. This variation reflects
on therapy, requiring methods to characterize these leukemias. Thus, methods such
as immunophenotyping by flow cytometry (IFC), multiparametric and quantitative, help
in the follow-up of these neoplasms. In this context, the objective of this study is to
perform a retrospective immunophenotyping study of 975 patients with AL. Clinical
cases were analyzed through immunophenotyping using markers directed to lymphoid
antigens (B, T and NK), myeloid, among others related to cellular immaturity, helping
to detect ALs. At the same time, all data was correlated using statistical approaches
advanced by R 4.3.0, also considering parallel information such as gender and age.
975 cases of ALs between 2010 and 2022 were analyzed, among which were 265 B
ALL, 57 T-ALL and 656 AML. Regarding the immunophenotypic pattern, the ability of
the IFC to distinguish the main groups of ALs was evidenced, in the absolute majority,
for the antibodies. In addition, we highlight the main markers to define each acute
leukemia and the main phenotypic aberrances found in each. It was also observed,
corroborating the literature, that ALL were more frequent in children and for males,
while AMLs in adults and female individuals in general analysis, prevailing the
incidence of males among adult group (18 to 64 years old) patients. By this way, when
properly applied, IFC can have a great impact on the diagnosis, classification and
prognostic analysis of neoplastic processes
