SUMMARY:

Breakfast is one of the most important meals for adolescent development, it provides a variety of macro and micro nutrients for the correct functioning of the body. However, the changes that occur during adolescence can predispose changes in eating habits that can lead to skipping meals such as breakfast. Skipping breakfast leads to a wide variety of problems for the body, including obesity and dyslipidemia. Obesity is a chronic non-communicable disease that continues to grow today. This problem is even more worrying when it comes to children and adolescents, given the consequences and worsening throughout life. the omission of breakfast has been evaluated given the impacts that this omission is linked to a greater consumption of processed foods, snacks and also with greater energy consumption. Therefore, the objective of this study is to verify the association between skipping breakfast and metabolic changes in overweight adolescents. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 154 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years, of both sexes and diagnosed with overweight or obesity. Data collection was carried out at 3 different moments, with an interval of 30-45 days between each stage. The 1st stage involved collecting sociodemographic, economic data, clinical and dietary assessment using a semi-structured questionnaire and a 24-hour recall (R24) followed by anthropometric assessment. The 2nd stage consisted of collecting blood for biochemical analysis and performing the 1R24h. In the 3rd stage, the results of the biochemical tests were delivered and nutritional guidance was provided according to the degree of excess weight and biochemical changes. From data collection we observed that of the 154 participants, 71 (46%) were female, and 22 (21%) did not eat breakfast. These adolescents belong to the first tertile of income (37.5%) and first tertile of energy intake (35.5%), overweight (37.8%), normal cholesterol (31.1%), normal LDL (27, 6%), normal HDL (31.7%) and normal triglycerides (27.6%), however without statistical significance according to the bivariate and multivariate Poisson analyzes (p >0.05). We observed that of the 83 (54%) male adolescents, 21 (25.3%) did not eat breakfast, while 62 (74.7%) did. We found that the consumption of breakfast with UPF was more frequent in males 38 (47.3%), were obese 52 (44.4%), had altered cholesterol 31 (39.7%) and had higher energy intake 23 (45 ,1%). From what was presented and analyzed, it can be seen that there is a correlation between obesity and breakfast consumption, as there is a tendency towards overweight in individuals who do not eat breakfast, as well as the majority of women who eat breakfast. but they skipped the meal.
