SUMMARY:

Food Insecurity (FI) is the lack of access to adequate food, quantitatively and qualitatively. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the prevalence of FI across the world, particularly affecting more vulnerable populations. In the older adults, food insecurity is associated with worse health outcomes, contributing to a worse perception of quality of life (QoL). In this sense, the aim is to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the frequency of FI and QoL in older adults at Brazuca Natal Post-Covid Study. It is a study with two designs: cross-sectional and cohort. The data from the cross-sectional study come from the project “Food insecurity, health and nutrition conditions in the adult and older adults population of a capital in the Northeast of Brazil: BRAZUCA Natal Study” and the cohort project, from the project “The BRAZUCA Natal study in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: impact on nutrition, health and risk of chronic diseases”. It applied an electronic questionnaire (Epicollect5) with socioeconomic and demographic information in the cross-sectional study. FI was verified using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA). To assess QoL, the WHOQOL-Bref and WHOQOL-OLD questionnaires were applied. Statistical analysis included absolute and percentage frequencies, with 95% confidence intervals and Poisson regression with robust variance. In the cohort study, we will verify the effect of the pandemic on the frequency of Food Insecurity and the perception of QoL among the older adults. The older adults who participated in wave 1 of the Brazuca Natal Study will be evaluated after the period of cessation of confinement imposed as a measure to protect against the spread of COVID-19 to determine whether there has been an increase in the frequency of FI and worsening of QoL. We will collect the information about whether COVID-19 by self-report. Statistical analysis will be performed using survival analysis using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression in multiple analysis, with respective hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals. Cohort data collection has not yet been finished. The results of the cross-sectional study showed that food insecurity was associated with a worse perception of QoL by the older adults. In the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire, we found that being food insecure increased the probability of having a worse perception of QoL in the psychological domains (PR=1.47; CI%: 1.10-1.66), environment (PR= 1.70; IC%: 1.21-2.41) and also in the overall percentage of QoL. In the WHOQoL-old questionnaire, food insecurity was also associated with a worse perception of QoL in the facets of sensory functioning (PR:1.46: 95%CI 1.06-2.00), autonomy (PR:1.57: 95%CI 1.13-2.18), present, past and future activities (PR:1.75: 95%CI 1.23-2.49), social participation (PR:1.34: 95%CI 1.01-1, 79) death, dying (PR:1.90: 95%CI 1.34-2.68) and also in the total score (PR:2.28: 95%CI 1.62-3.20). Considering these results, we concluded that the condition of food insecurity at domicile is related to low overall quality of life and lower quality of life in aging.
