SUMMARY:

Overweight and obesity are a serious public health problem and entail high costs to health systems. Changes in intestinal barrier function were observed in animal models with overweight and obesity, however, few studies have evaluated this theme in humans. The relationships between overweight and obesity and vitamin E have shown inconsistent results. This study aimed to determine the associations between overweight and obesity with the intestinal functional barrier and vitamin E status. An observational, quantitative, case-control and cross-sectional study was conducted with data collection in two time periods: September 2019 to March 2020 and November 2021 to March 2023. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data and blood and urine samples were collected. The evaluation of intestinal permeability was performed by the lactulose/mannitol test. Urine and blood samples were analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). In total, 66 individuals participated in the study, 29 eutrophic and 37 overweight and obese. Urinary lactulose/mannitol excretion was similar between the two groups (p = 0.968) studied. The overweight and obese group had higher serum vitamin E levels when compared to the eutrophic group.
