SUMMARY:

The dietary inflammatory index (DII) assesses the inflammatory potential of foods, which may be related to the development of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the contribution of food to the inflammatory potential of the diet and associated factors in adults and elderly people in the Brazuca Natal study. This study has two types of design: systematic review and cross-sectional population based. A systematic review registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CDR42022346170). Articles that fit the following valid criteria were included in the study: 1. Observational studies without language restriction that included adults and elderly of both sexes; 2. Population-based studies; and 3. Studies that present the dietary pattern in the analysis of the inflammatory potential of the diet and its association with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The articles were retrieved from the databases Embase, PubMed, Lilacs, Web of Science e Scopus, using search terms and applied in a program Rayyan, two reviewers independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of the articles and disagreements were resolved by a third person. The methodological quality assessment was performed using the scale of Newcastle–Ottawa. The cross-sectional study was carried out with 411 adults and elderly, of both sexes, living in the city of Natal/RN. Food consumption was assessed using the GloboDiet software, using two 24-hour recordings, the first through a face-to-face interview and the second through a telephone survey. The pro or anti-inflammatory potential of the diet was evaluated using the IID. The associated factors surveyed were gender, age group, race/color, marital status, education, physical inactivity, alcohol, smoking, hypertension, CVD, diabetes, BMI, waist property and waist-to-height ratio. Measures of central tendency and dispersion were used for continuous variables; and from proportion to categorical variables. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were continuous from Poisson Regression models using of STATA software. All analyzes were carried out by complex orders. The results of the systematic review found that a more pro-inflammatory diet plays a crucial role in the onset of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. A more pro-inflammatory diet is associated with increased mortality and pathophysiological processes related to cardiovascular disease. In the cross-sectional study, we observed a low IID of components with anti-inflammatory potential. Among the associated factors surveyed, it was observed that participants who reported not having a partner had a 13% higher prevalence of a pro-inflammatory diet than participants who reported having a partner (PR=1.113; p=0.035). Participants classified at higher risk according to RCE had a 21% higher prevalence of the pro-inflammatory diet classification than individuals at low risk (PR=1.21; p=0.054). It was concluded that, despite not having generated an association with most of the factors analyzed, the study showed that the diet of the maintained population has a high inflammatory potential, which can increase the risk of developing non-communicable chronic diseases.
