SUMMARY:

During breastfeeding there is little evidence on the consequences of maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) on infant health and nutrition. One study found that maternal UPF intake can impact the nutritional status and composition of breast milk, suggesting the influence of UPF consumption on infants. Therefore, because it is the only source of nutrients for infants on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), because the quality of the maternal diet reflects on the child's nutritional status and because of the scarcity of studies on the binomial, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of UPF consumption influence on the growth and feeding practices of their infants. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with the mother-child binomial up to 150 days postpartum assisted in the growth and development monitoring program of the primary health care network in Natal-RN. The anthropometric indicators weight for age, length for age, weight for length and BMI for age were evaluated according to the growth curves of the World Health Organization (WHO). Feeding practices were assessed using five breastfeeding indicators and two complementary feeding indicators, according to the WHO. Maternal consumption was obtained through 24-hour recalls and foods were categorized according to the NOVA classification. The binomial was grouped according to tertiles of energy participation of maternal UPF consumption. The partial results correspond to 76 binomials, with 26- year-old lactating women and an average consumption of 2765.87 kcal/day (95%CI: 2488.20 - 3043.54), with 26.24% of these calories derived from UPF. Of the infants studied, 60.5% were male, aged 2 months, 38.4% were overweight and 10.6% were short in length for age. Regarding feeding practices, although EBF was found in 69.6% of the cases, less than 50% of the infants were breastfed in the first hour of life (AM1H) and in the first 48 hours of life (AM2D). In the tertiles with the highest participation of UPF, more cases of children were found on mixed breastfeeding (31.6% versus 16.7%), using bottles (42.1% versus 22.2%) and with nutritional deviations such as excessive weight (38.9% versus 30.8%), thinness (11.1% versus 0%) and low length for age (11.8% versus 7.1%) when compared to infants grouped in the lowest tertile. Although these proportions did not present statistically significant differences, it is necessary to continue the study to verify whether maternal UPF consumption is related to the growth and feeding practices of infants. The final results of this study will provide important information about the impact of maternal consumption of UPF on the child's health and may support actions to promote healthy eating in childhood.
