SUMMARY:

In 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, directly affecting academic communities, due to the closure of universities as a measure to prevent contamination. Food, in addition to being a basic need and a human right, was seriously affected. The study evaluated the locations and frequency of food acquisition, hand hygiene habits, food and packaging, and the generation of household waste in an academic community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research had a cross-sectional design, carried out through an online questionnaire.
After obtaining the answers (n=1472) the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and statistical tests were applied, where p values lower than 0.01 were considered significant. The majority of the population maintained the tendency to purchase food in supermarkets (89.5%) and the frequency of orders for products from markets for delivery by professors and graduate students was more regularly verified (31.7% and 24, 2%), respectively. There was an increase in the consumption of packaging in the population studied (44.9%) and it was observed that 59.5% of the population did not separate household waste, nor (79.8%) intended for composting. The research provides subsidies for future investigations and interventions in the field of food and post-pandemic sustainability.
