BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Nutrição
SUMMARY:

The sleep-waking pattern has been studied as it constitutes an important aspect related to people's health. In addition, studies show the influence of obesity on insufficient sleep, based on changes in food consumption, evidencing the relationship between the circadian cycle and physiological adaptations. In this sense, this study aims to evaluate the association between sleep-wake cycle patterns, anthropometric nutritional status, and adherence to the Food Guide recommendations for the Brazilian people, among the adults in the city of Natal/RN. A cross-sectional study was carried out within the scope of the Brazuca Natal project, with 411 adults. Data were collected using a standardized instrument, using the Epicollect5 platform. The sleep-wake pattern was verified from the calculation of sleeping and waking times, and questions related to sleep satisfaction were collected from the Quality-of-Life Assessment Instrument. Anthropometric nutritional status was assessed through BMI and inappropriate eating practices by adherence to the Food Guide of the Brazilian population. We found that 42.1% (95%CI 37.5-46.6%) of the study population have sleep duration that may be appropriate or not recommended, and 27% (95%CI 22.6-31.1%) are very dissatisfied with their sleep. Of the total number of people evaluated, 70.1% were overweight, 13.4% (95%CI 10.5-16.5%) had low adherence to the Food Guide recommendations, and 40.1% (95%CI 35.5 -45.0%), had average adherence. We found that with each increase in the score of adherences to the recommendations of the Food Guide for the Brazilian population, the chance of people considering themselves very dissatisfied/dissatisfied with their sleep was reduced by 4% when compared to those very satisfied/satisfied with their sleep (OR=0.96; 95%CI 0.93-0.99). People who had sleep duration according to the recommendations considered themselves very satisfied/satisfied with their sleep, and those who did not live with a partner slept about 23 to 76 minutes longer. We conclude that the population studied had a high proportion of people with non-recommended/appropriate sleep duration and about 1/3 of them were very dissatisfied/dissatisfied with their sleep. The occurrence of overweight was high and adherence to the recommendations of the Food Guide for the Brazilian population was low. It was observed that the lower the adherence to the Food Guide, the more dissatisfied with sleep the person was. In addition, people with the recommended sleep duration, who considered themselves very satisfied/satisfied with their sleep and who did not live with a partner had a longer sleep duration.
