PAGES: 55
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Nutrição
SUMMARY:

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder and its prevalence in children and adolescents has been increasing over the years. Studies point to deficiency of trace elements as one of the factors involved in the etiology of the disorder, with zinc being one of the main trace elements investigated in individuals with ASD. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the relationship between zinc status and Autism in children and adolescents. Initially, this review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), with registration number: CRD42020157907. The methodological guidelines adopted are in accordance with the statement Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta Analyzes (PRISMA). The selection of studies was carried out based on an active search of national and international databases, Pubmed, Scopus and Lillacs, using the search descriptors: “zinc”, “trace elements”, “Biometals”, “Trace Minerals”, “Autistic Disorder Autism”, “Infantile”, “Autism child”, “teenager”. 35 studies were included in this review for data analysis, carried out in 13 countries, totaling 3315 participants, being 1691 children with ASD and 1624 controls. Six types of sample were evaluated, with capillary zinc (51%) and plasma zinc (46%) being the most used. The studies will undergo methodological quality assessment according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The results of this review may support the assessment of differentiated zinc needs for this population, in addition to directing intervention studies that promote and propose supplementation strategies in nutritional care in the treatment of ASD.
