RESUMO:

Breast cancer is a chronic disease of multifactorial etiology, increasing worldwide incidence and presenting high mortality rates. Among the factors associated with lifestyle, healthy eating is of great relevance not only in prevention, but also in the treatment of this type of cancer. Reduced toxicities, improved quality of life, better prognosis and increased survival are reflections of healthy eating practices during cancer therapy. In this sense, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a dietary intervention on the toxicity and quality of life of women with breast cancer who begin neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment. To this end, a randomized clinical trial was conducted with female patients diagnosed with breast cancer who began neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment from November 2018 at the Advanced Oncology Center (CECAN) of the Rio Grande do Norte League Against Cancer. Cancer (Liga), located in the municipality of Natal / RN, Brazil. The volunteers were randomized and allocated to parallel groups, where the control and intervention groups received nutritional advice on healthy eating practices during treatment, and additionally only the intervention group received an individualized eating plan. Both groups were followed during the first three cycles of chemotherapy, at which time their dietary intake, toxicities and quality of life were evaluated. The generalized estimation equation was used to verify the effect of group and time interaction on the selected variables. To date, 20 women were followed, nine in the control group and eleven in the intervention group, with a mean age of 46.1 ± 8.6 and 45.6 ± 10.1 years, respectively in each group. There were no statistically significant differences in food intake and toxicity between groups. Regarding quality of life (QOL), although no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups regarding overall health and QOL, work function showed a greater decline during chemotherapy sessions in the control group (p <0.001 for interaction). , as well as a difference in social function (p = 0.024 for interaction) and insomnia throughout treatment (p = 0.044). In conclusion, preliminary data indicate that dietary intervention does not reduce chemotherapy toxicity, but preserves a domain of quality of life related to work function and produces reflexes in social function and insomnia.
