RESUMO:

Dancers constitute a risk group for the development of Eating Disorders (ED) due to the strict demands on physical performance, contributing to body image dissatisfaction (BI). This study aimed to evaluate the presence of risk behaviors for ED, BI and their associations with nutritional variables in dancers, comparing them with sportswomen and sedentary. This cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2016 to June 2018. The sample involved female participants in three groups: dancers (n = 19), sportswomen (n = 40) and sedentary (n = 27). Body Mass Index (BMI) and body composition were analyzed by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). To assess the risk behaviors for ED, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), directed to Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh (BITE), focused on Bulimia Nervosa (BN) behaviors, were used. For body image perception, the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and Silhouette Figure Scale (SFS) were applied. In dancers, BMI was significantly lower (One-Way ANOVA Test, p = 0.014) when compared to the other groups studied, of 20.9 (2.35), while for sportswomen and sedentary, 22.9 (2.73). and 23.3 (3.47), respectively. The body fat percentage (% BF) was significantly lower in the dancers 29.8% (8.01) compared to the other groups (p≤0.0005). Whole body bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA was within the expected age limits in the three groups, with an average of 0.3 (0.82) Z-scores. EAT-26 demonstrated that all groups showed normal behavior for AN, without significant differences per group, with a median of 11.0 (7.0; 16.0) points. BITE also did not differ between the groups studied (p = 0.054), however, the median score of the dancers was 15.0 (12.0; 23.0), while the average of the athletes was 21.6 (7.73) and sedentary was 23.8 (6.37). The BSQ showed that the perception of BI did not differ between the groups (p = 0.223), with a mean score of 93.0 (30.1). The presence of BI distortion assessed by EFS was also no different between the groups studied (11% in dancers, 27% in sportswomen and 26% in sedentary, p = 0.051), as well as dissatisfaction with BI (11% in dancers, 23% in sports and sedentary, p = 0.366). BMI and% BF showed a positive and significant correlation with the BSQ score in the dancers (BMI: r2 = 0.577, p = 0.010; % BF: r2 = 0.509, p = 0.026), as did BMI in sportswomen (BMI: r2 = 0.632, p = 0.0005), and BMI and% BF in sedentary (BMI: r2 = 0.670, p = 0.0005; % BF: r2 = 0.468, p = 0.016). It was concluded that there is no suggestive behavior for AT in the dancers, but there was risk behavior for BN in sports and sedentary, as well as no significant difference in the distortion / dissatisfaction of BI between the groups. There was a positive correlation with BMI and BI perception in the three groups, as well as % BF and BI perception in dancers and sedentary.
