RESUMO:

The monitoring of the nutritional status of adolescents in the school environment is a strategic measure of prevention and integral care of the diseases related to food and nutrition, and should be carried out in private and public educational institutions. In this direction, the federal institutes are part of the National Student Assistance Program (Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil - PNAES), which considers feeding as one of the actions to enable equal opportunities and contribute to improving the academic performance of students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability. The objective of this research was to evaluate the evolution of the nutritional status of adolescents from the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) in Natal/RN between 2017 and 2018, as well as its association with participation in a feeding program. It is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. Secondary sociodemographic, anthropometric, health and lifestyle information data were collected from a representative sample of students from the institution entering high school in the year 2017 in the city of Natal. During the year 2018, these students were submitted to anthropometric evaluation and answered a self-filled questionnaire with sociodemographic, health and lifestyle data. Data were collected from 251 adolescents, the majority of whom were female (52.6%), with an average age of 15.7 ± 0.9 years on admission and average per capita income of 1.05 ± 4.2 minimum wages. Among the schoolchildren observed, 38.6% were assisted by the PNAES, of which 67.0% participated in the IFRN Student Feeding Program (Programa de Alimentação Estudantil do IFRN). Between 2017 and 2018, it was verified in the group as a whole, reduction in the prevalence of thinness (from 3.2% to 2.0%; p=0.38) and overweight (from 23.5% to 21.4%; p=0.33); and increase in the prevalence of stunting (from 4.4% to 6.1%, p=0.063) due to the reduction in the mean z-score of the Height/age index (H/A) (-0.21 ZS to -0.36 ZS; p<0.001). However, in the participants of the IFRN Student Feeding Program (Programa de Alimentação Estudantil do IFRN) the reduction of H/A was significantly lower in comparison to non-participants (Δ -0.12 ZS vs. Δ -0.20 ZS, p=0.048). For the body mass index/age (BMI/A) there was no significant difference in evolution between groups. It is concluded that the nutritional status of the IFRN students is marked by high rates of overweight at the two moments observed, evidencing the need for strategies that promote healthy eating and the reduction of sedentary behaviors. It is suggested that the institution’s feeding program can contribute to safeguard the linear growth of students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability, by increasing the availability of food through the provision of lunch and/or dinner.
