RESUMO:

Changes in eating habits in adolescence, characterized by high consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods, may result in micronutrient deficiency and the early occurrence of chronic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the consumption of these foods and the relationships with the prevalence of nutrient inadequacy and cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents. A cross - sectional study was conducted with a final sample of 444 adolescents, using a secondary database of a study entitled Risk factors for CVD among adolescents beneficiaries of the National School Feeding Program - Natal / RN, UFRN, developed in public schools in the city of Natal, between 2007 and 2008. The variables family history of cardiovascular disease, maternal schooling, anthropometric nutritional status, blood pressure and lipid profile were considered. Dietary and dietary intake data were obtained by two 24-hour reminders. The foods consumed were classified according to the type of processing in processed and ultraprocessed. The prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy was estimated using the "Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)" method, except for iron in which the manually determined probabilistic approach was used. The data were analyzed descriptively by means of the frequency distribution and confidence interval, checking the normality of the variables by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. To estimate the relationship between the energy percentage of processed and ultraprocessed foods with the prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy and cardiometabolic risk factors, an ordinal logistic regression was performed (p≤0.05). It was observed that 91.9% of adolescents were in the age group between 10 and 13 years. The consumption of processed foods ranged from 5.8 (1.7)% of total energy in Q1 to 20.6 (2.9)% in Q4. The consumption of ultraprocessed foods ranged from 21.4 (4.9)% in Q1 to 61.5 (11.7)% in Q4. The most consumed food groups were "French bread" and "processed meats" for the processed and "cakes, pies and biscuits" and "sliced bread" for the ultraprocessed. There was a high prevalence of inadequate consumption of vitamins D, folate, vitamin E, calcium and selenium, in both sexes, in the age groups of 10 to 13 years and 14 to 19 years. The low prevalence of phosphorus was observed only in the age group of 14 to 19 years. The higher intake of processed foods was positively associated with the increase in the prevalence of inadequate vitamin B1 (p = 0.04) and selenium (p <0.01). The inadequacy of vitamin B1 (p = 0.03) and zinc (p <0.01) were associated with the proportion of energy from ultraprocessed foods. The highest consumption of processed foods was associated with hypercholesterolemia (PR = 3.08) and hypertriglyceridemia (PR = 3.79), as well as adolescents whose mothers had primary education (PR = 1.72). The higher consumption of ultraprocessed was also associated with schoolchildren whose mothers had low schooling (PR = 0.36). Excessive consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods by adolescents may reflect the increased prevalence of inadequate nutrients, especially vitamin B1, selenium and zinc, as well as short- and long-term health conditions.
