RESUMO:

The lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology, characterized by the motor neuron degeneration, muscle paralysis and death. Association studies between the prognosis of ALS and lipid profile have been conducted, while research has shown a relationship between plasma lipids and copper (Cu). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between Cu status and lipid profile in ALS patients treated at the Multidisciplinary Outpatient Facility ELA/ HUOL, Natal/ RN, Brazil. A cross- sectional study was carried out with 27 adults and elderly individuals with ALS (case group) and 26 cases without the disease (control group). The ALS patients were clinically characterized according to initial clinical manifestation, disease time, feeding pathway and functional capacity. The body mass index (BMI) and dietary intake of energy, macronutrients, fibers and Cu were evaluated for both groups. Cu status was verified by plasma Cu and serum ceruloplasmin dosages, and the lipid profile by biochemical measurements of total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL), HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides (TGL). The descriptive analysis and the normality test was performed. Student's t-test and Mann Whitney's test were used for comparison of means. Correlation between plasma Cu and biochemical and dietary markers was made by Spearman's correlation test. The effect of the independent variables on the functional scale was estimated by model based on Poisson distribution. For the statistical analysis SPSS, version 22, was used and a 5% level of significance was adopted. The mean age of the case and control group was 56 and 55.4 years, respectively. The control group had a significantly higher BMI. The case group reveled significant lower energy, protein, carbohydrate and fat intake. Cu intake did not differ significantly between groups. Ceruloplasmin, LDL and TC were directly correlated to plasma Cu in the control group. HDL was directly correlated to plasma Cu in both groups. There was positive correlation between ceruloplasmin and LDL only in control group. Functional scale was negatively correlated with Cu plasma, dietary Cu and TC, and positively correlated with TGL, HDL, LDL and ceruloplasmin.
