SUMMARY:

Due to the ongoing pandemic scenario in 2020, 2021, and still in 2022, the antibiotic azithromycin was used as one of the items in the 'COVID kit,' widely employed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assesses the influence of this antibiotic on the life cycle of the Chrysomya megacephala fly, a species of high forensic importance in the country. For the experiments, eggs and larvae were utilized, kept in an insectary and raised in plastic containers containing raw ground meat supplemented with azithromycin. As a control, larvae were treated solely with a diet without the addition of the antibiotic. Monitoring was conducted every six hours, starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 10 PM, aiming not to exceed 12 hours without analysis. Additionally, this study aims to propose a new diet for the maintenance of this species in a laboratory setting. Therefore, two brands of wet food for felines and two brands for canines were evaluated, all with the same flavors: chicken and lamb. Completing the other treatments, raw ground meat was used, along with the diet already used routinely, serving as a control. Larvae in this treatment were monitored every 12 hours. In both experiments, mortality, any morphological changes, phase changes, and the duration of each phase, as well as measurements of size and weight, were observed. Continuing the cycle, the effect on the oviposition of adult flies was also analyzed.
