SUMMARY:

The objective was to characterize the weight development of Santa Inês lambs and ewe lambs, from birth to weaning, managed on pasture and receiving concentrated supplementation via creep-feeding. Data from 212 Santa Inês sheep were used, 108 males and 104 females, aged between 1 and 84 days, from four breeding seasons (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021). During the data collection period, the animals were kept in an experimental pasture composed of Panicum maximum cv. Massai, with a total area of 0.96 ha (9600m²), equipped with a drinking fountain and a trough for mineral supplementation. Concentrated supplementation was offered in the management shed, equipped with drinkers and collective feeders with general access (parents and offspring) and restricted access to offspring (creep-feeding). The lambs received it ad libitum from the first day of life. To evaluate the weight development, the lambs were weighed every seven days, until weaning, allowing the calculation of total weight gain (TGW) and average daily weight gain (DMG). With the aid of a hypometer, the morphometric measurements of the animals were taken every 28 days. Multiple regression models were tested to estimate live weight using biometric measurements as independent variables. There was an effect (<0.05) of the type of delivery on all variables of birth weight, average daily gain, total weight gain and weaning weight, there was also an effect (<0.05) of sex on the variables birth weight and weaning weight. Pearson's correlation coefficients between morphometric measurements and weight were positive and significant (P<0.05), with the exception of the correlation between posterior height and rump width. Lambs from double births develop more slowly than animals from single births, but when weaned at 84 days they present compensatory gains in relation to traditional systems of early weaning and the use of concentrated supplementation enhances the weight development of Santa Inês sheep weaned at 84 days old. Biometric measurements work efficiently to predict the weight of animals weaned at 84 days.
