SUMMARY:

The hypothesis was that the Panicum maximum cultivars implanted in the Brazilian semiarid have satisfactory quality for use in animal production systems. The objective was to evaluate the rate of forage accumulation and the quality of six cultivars of Panicum maximum in the Brazilian semiarid region. The experiment was conducted at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN from April 10, 2016 to April 1, 2017, in a randomized block design with four replications and six cultivars of Panicum maximum as treatments: Aruana, Massai, Mombaça, Tamani, Tanzânia and Zuri, laboratory analyzes to determine the quality of forage were carried out at the Laboratory of Applied Nutrition of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS in the period from September 3, 2018 to September 2, 2019. Analyzes of dry matter (DM), ashes for the determination of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), protodioscin, in vitro digestibility of the dry matter (DIVMS), in vitro digestibility of organic matter (IVDMD), in vitro digestibility of crude protein (IVCPD), in vitro digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (IVNDFD), in vitro digestibility of acid detergent fiber (IVADFD) and cumulative gas production in vitro. The rate of forage accumulation did not differ between cultivars (41.9 Kg/ha/day of DM) with the exception of cv. Aruana that had a lower accumulation rate (23.0 Kg/ha/day of DM). The highest levels of CP were found in cv. Tamani (10.6%) and the lowest in cv. Mombaça (6.9%). NDF levels were higher for cv. Zuri (76.5%) and the lowest values were observed in cv. Aruana (71.2%). The cv. Aruana showed the highest amount of protodioscin among the cultivars tested (1.03 g / kg DM) and the highest IVDMD (78.7%). The highest levels of IVCPD were found in the cvs. Aruana (87.1%) and Zuri (86.9%). The cv. Massai presented the highest levels for IVNDFD (68.1%). The highest production of gas in vitro was observed in cv. Aruana (Y= 20.48 mL/100 mg of incubated DM), in this same fraction, cv. Mombaça obtained the lowest value. The cv. Aruana has low forage production in semi-arid conditions, despite the superior quality of the others, in contrast to cv. Mombaça suffered losses in quality, and the use of these two cultivars in non-irrigated systems in the Brazilian semi-arid region was not indicated. The cultivars Massai, Tamani, Tanzânia and Zuri are indicated for use in animal production systems in the Brazilian semiarid because they have satisfactory forage accumulation and quality.
