SUMMARY:

In this work we tried to test the hypothesis that one of the cultivars of Brachiaria evaluated has satisfactory qualities for use in production systems in Northeast Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the accumulation of dry matter, the content of protodioscin, chemical composition, digestibility and the kinetics of in vitro fermentation of cultivars of Brachiaria spp. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN, with a randomized block design with four replications and five treatments represented by five cultivars of Brachiaria: Marandu, Paiaguás, Piatã, Xaraés and Basilisk, evaluated in four cuts throughout the first year of implementation. The analyzes were performed in the animal nutrition laboratory belonging to the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul Foundation. From the samples collected, daily dry matter accumulation, percentage of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (PB), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (FDA) of the blade were evaluated leaf and stem, in vitro dry matter digestibility (DIVDM), organic matter (DIVOM), crude protein (DIVPB), neutral detergent fiber (DIVNDF), acid detergent fiber (DIVFDA), in vitro fermentation kinetics and protodioscin concentration. The cultivars showed similar results for DM (35.12%), with the lowest values observed in the samples from the last cut (25.57%), regardless of the component. The cultivar Xaraés showed the highest TAF (54.09 kg / ha.day of DM) and the cultivar Paiaguás the lowest with 33.72 kg / ha.day of DM. The cultivar Basilisk presented the highest levels of CP (9.5), followed by cultivars Marandu and Paiaguás with average (8.6%). For all cultivars, the highest percentages of NDF (70.76%) and FDA (41.52%) were found in cut four, the period when the greatest amount of rain was concentrated. The cultivar Basilisk showed the highest digestibility (80%), followed by the cultivar Paiaguás (75.9%). The protodioscin concentrations were influenced by the cutting ages. The cultivar Basilisk presented the highest concentrations (5.54 and 5.13%) in cuts 1 and 3 (110 and 111 days after regrowth, respectively) and the lowest (1.51 and 1.23%) in cuts 2 and 4 (84 and 51 days after regrowth, respectively). The cultivars Piatã and Xaraés showed the lowest concentrations of protodioscin, ranging from 0.94 to 2%. The Basilisk cultivar stands out from the other cultivars for its good nutritional value and high digestibility even in periods of water deficit, being a good option to compose production systems in the region. However, due to the higher concentrations of protodioscin, in production systems with small ruminants, the cultivars Piatã and Xaraés are a good forage option, with low levels of protodioscin, excellent accumulation of dry matter and stem ratio.
