RESUMO:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the consumption and performance of sheep fed with alternative protein sources associated with forage cactus. Were utilized 32 sheep SPRD (without defined breed) with initial mean weight of 22.34 ± 2.05 kg, distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and eight replications. The animals were housed in individual stalls for monitoring weight gain (with weekly weighings), measuring food consumption, prediction of dry matter intake and nutrients, and nutrients apparent digestibility. The four treatments were composed by the association of the hay of the Masai grass and the forage palm with the different protein sources, which are: Soybean Meal, Babassu Cake, Coconut Cake and Cottonseed Cake. It was observed a treatment effect (P <0.05) on dry matter intake (CMS) expressed in kg / day, % BW and BW0.75, with the following averages: 1.27 kg / day; 4.24% BW; 99.33 BW0.75, respectively, as well as for consumption organic matter (OMI) 1.16 kg/day, crude protein intake (ICP) 0.142 kg / day, non-fibrous carbohydrate intake (NFCI) 0.640 kg / day, with higher averages for the treatment of soybean meal. It was observed an effect (P <0.05) for of neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI) 0.440 kg / day and for the of ethereal extract intake (EEI) 0.061 kg / day, with higher averages for the treatments of the Cottonseed Cake and Coconut Cake, respectively, as well as an effect (P <0.05) for the daily average weight gain 204.24 g / day, with higher averages for the Cottonseed Cake treatment. No influence of treatments on the final weight 35.40 kg, total weight gain 13.19 kg, feed conversion 6.36, and feed efficiency 16.49% and apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and NFC with a mean of 68.62%, 69.56%, 74.78%, 45.72%, 85.50%, respectively. We concluded that the cottonseed cake and babassu cake sources can be used as alternatives to the soybean meal associated with forage palm in diets for sheep in feedlot. Although coconut cake has been found to outperform other sources in terms of daily weight gain, its use can also be considered, mainly because of its economic value and availability.
