RESUMO:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients, the ingestive behavior and the performance of sheep from two genetic groups (Soinga and mestizos) fed with forage palm genotypes resistant to carmin cochonilla (Mexican Sheep and Ear ). Twenty - eight sheep were used, 14 of which were mixed and 14 mixed with an average initial weight of 17.9 kg ± 1.58 kg, randomly distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2x2 factorial scheme. The animals were kept confined for 102 days, the first 30 days for adaptation of the animals to the facilities and experimental management, the remaining 72 days for data collection. Intake of DM, OM, OMD, CP, NDF, EE, CNF and TDN in kg / day was not affected by the experimental diets (1.009, 0.910, 0.666, 0.139, 0.298, 0.030, 0.557 and 0.732, respectively). The dry matter and nutrient intake and feed conversion were not different among the genetic groups (p> 0.05). However, there was a significant interaction between palm species and genetic clusters for the consumption of neutral detergent fiber. The digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, CP, EE and NFC were higher when the animals consumed the Mexican Elephant Ear Palm (p <0.05), there was no interaction between the palm species and the genetic groups studied for digestibility Of nutrients. There was interaction between the palm species and the genetic groups for the behavioral variables leisure time and feeding time. No effects of palms, genetic groups and interaction between both were observed for the average daily weight gain, which presented a mean of 0.132 kg / day, being 0.118 kg / day for the Soinga sheep consuming small palm and for the mestizos 0.150 kg / day. For the animals that consumed the Mexican Elephant Ear palm the average gains were 0.128 kg / day for the Soingas and 0.135 kg / day for the mestizos. The genetic groups Soinga and mestiço presented similar performance when fed with the different palm species, however, in view of the verified results for digestibility, it is recommended the use of the Mexican Elephant Ear Palm in the diet of confined sheep.
