SUMMARY:

First formulated by the medieval philosopher Anselm of Canterbury (ca. 1033–1109), the Ontological Argument has been reformulated and discussed multiple times in the history of philosophy. With the aim of trying to establish a connection between a reasoning of historical relevance in philosophy and the roots of the contemporary analytical tradition, as well as advocating the importance of historiographical studies for a better understanding of the origin and development of ideas within analytical philosophy, this work aims to investigate the influences of the historically known Ontological Argument on the work of the British philosopher and one of the great exponents of the analytical tradition of contemporary philosophy, Bertrand Russell (1872–1970). We will do this based on the reading and interpretation of philosophical works on the topic, which will be divided into three main moments. Firstly, based on a general historiographical review of the tradition of discussion on the Argument in question, we will outline a historical overview of the ideas presented about it mainly in the Middle Ages and modernity. In a second step, we will expose Russell's perspective on this development of reasoning in his more historiographical works — such as Wisdom of the West (1959) and A History of Western Philosophy (1945) — thus allowing us to measure the role of Argument as one of the traditional questions to be elucidated by the author with his new way of doing philosophy through the logical and linguistic analysis of propositions. Finally, we will focus on an analysis of the Russellian perspective of the Ontological Argument, more specifically, based on his Theory of Definite Descriptions contained in On Denoting (1905). With this, we intend to be able to expose the historical importance of the argument within this seminal theory for analytical philosophy presented in its short article that revolutionized 20th century philosophy, locating the Ontological Argument as one of the examples of philosophical reasoning that is traditionally problematic but can be elucidated in front of a new logical theory of analysis of propositions.
