SUMMARY:

This study analyzes how heritage education, based on the engagement with Dona Neném's White
Rooster (Galo Branco de Dona Neném) and the pottery-making practices of Santo Antônio do
Potengi, can contribute to the development of historical consciousness and territorial belonging
among middle school students at Escola Municipal Vicente de França Monte, in São Gonçalo do
Amarante/RN. Grounded in the understanding of the Galo Branco as an element of memory,
heritage, and civic monument, the research focuses on using this local symbol and artisan
knowledge as articulating resources for meaningful historical learning. To implement this practice
in the classroom, the study proposes the application of an Educational Product entitled
Investigative Educational Scrapbook: Portraits of Clay: Work, Industrialization, and Memory in São
Gonçalo do Amarante. Structured as an unfinished notebook of sources and memories, the
material engages students in analyzing material traces, oral sources, and official documents. By
mobilizing the monument and the community's pottery history, the proposal encourages students
to connect artisanal traditions, industrialization processes, and territorial dynamics, fostering a
critical historical consciousness rooted in their own social environment.
