SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the reading and interpretation challenges faced by 6th-grade
students at the Cônego Luiz Wanderley State School, located in the Gramoré neighborhood in the
northern zone of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Based on the premise that deficiencies in these skills
are not merely a secondary issue but rather a factor that directly compromises historical learning
and the understanding of social rights, the research proposes "Historical Literacy" as an
emancipatory pedagogical tool. As an intervention strategy, the study utilizes the Code of
Hammurabi through a teaching resource known as the "History Box," transforming this ancient
legal artifact into a historical source for the classroom. The central objective is to connect the
materiality of the law and past notions of justice with the students' own lived experiences and the
realities of their peripheral community. In doing so, the work seeks to foster the development of
critical, reflective individuals capable of reading not only academic texts and documents but also
the world around them, thereby reinterpreting the past to better understand present-day
inequalities.
