Phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity of the oil and coproduct of the faveleira seed (Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus).
Cnidoscolus quercifolius, oilseed, oil, antioxidant capacity, antibacterial activity.
This study aimed to evaluate the bioactive properties of faveleira seed, its press coproduct and its oil and to characterize the oil in order to identify the potential use of them. The faveleira seed were pressed and the following analyzes were performed: antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in the seed, oil and coproduct; total phenolic content and total flavonoid in the seed and coproduct; and physical and physicochemical characterization and fatty acid profile in the oil. The samples showed no antibacterial activity, but showed antioxidant activity. In addition, the faveleira seed and its coproduct showed considerable amount of the total phenolic content including flavonoids and faveleira seed oil has good characteristics and predominantly unsaturated fatty acids. Thus, faveleira seeds, its oil and its press coproduct have potential for use in human food.
