SUMMARY:

Sugar-sweetened beverages comprise sweetened liquids containing different forms of added sugars. The consumption of these beverages contributes to an increased dietary energy intake through the ingestion of liquid calories. In 2021, the global prevalence of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was 30.56%, with projections indicating continued growth until 2050. This consumption does not occur in isolation, as it is associated with multiple interrelated factors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate factors associated with sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among adults and older adults participating in the Brazuca Natal Study. This is a population-based cross-sectional study conducted between June 2019 and March 2020, including 411 adults and older adults from the municipality of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, selected through two-stage cluster probabilistic sampling (census tracts and households). Data collection was carried out through household interviews using an electronic questionnaire to assess sugar-sweetened beverage consumption based on two 24-hour dietary recalls (24HR), in addition to socioeconomic and demographic information, household food insecurity assessed by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), anthropometric data to calculate the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and self-reported type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Poisson regression was used to analyze the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and socioeconomic, demographic, food insecurity, WHR, and T2DM variables, estimating prevalence ratios (PR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The estimated prevalence of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was 52.14% (95% CI 44.89-59.29) in the studied population. A higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages was observed among females (PR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.13–2.07), non-white individuals (PR = 1.25; 95% CI 1.01-1.56), those experiencing food insecurity (PR = 1.33; 95% CI 1.03-1.73), and individuals with self-reported T2DM (PR = 1.30; 95% CI 1.01-1.68). In conclusion, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among adults and older adults in the Brazuca Natal Study is associated with sociodemographic factors, food insecurity, and the presence of T2DM. These findings highlight the need to strengthen public policies and intersectoral actions aimed at promoting adequate and healthy eating, with an emphasis on Food and Nutrition Education strategies, in order to contribute to improvements in population health and well-being.
