SUMMARY:

Access to adequate and healthy food can contribute to healthy sleep. Therefore, adherence to the recommendations of the Brazilian Dietary Guidelines (GAPB), ensuring food security, and an adequate sleep profile are important strategies for promoting health. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze adherence to the dietary guidelines for the Brazilian population and its relationship with food insecurity at home and sleep patterns among participants in the BRAZUCA Natal study. This is a cross-sectional, population-based study, with data collection occurring between June 2019 and March 2020. Adherence to the GAPB recommendations was assessed using a questionnaire with 24 questions aligned with and opposed to its recommendations, and subsequently classified as low/medium and high adherence. Food insecurity was analyzed using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA). Sleep profile was assessed by sleep duration and satisfaction. Sleep duration was classified as less than 7 hours or equal to/greater than 7 hours of sleep. Sleep satisfaction was defined based on reports of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with one's own sleep. Low/medium adherence to the GAPB was associated with food insecurity (p-value=<0.001). Study participants who reported dissatisfaction/high dissatisfaction with sleep had a stronger relationship with food insecurity (p-value=0.001), as did those who had non-recommended/dissatisfied and recommended/dissatisfied sleep (p-value=0.001). Current smokers reported greater satisfaction with sleep (p-value=0.025). Eating practices aligned with the GAPB were associated with longer sleep duration, while most opposing eating practices were associated with dissatisfaction with sleep. We conclude that low/medium adherence to the guide is associated with food insecurity, and sleep dissatisfaction is more closely related to lower adherence to the GAPB. We emphasize the need to promote public actions and policies for healthy eating and better sleep quality, with a view to improving people's health.
